We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again about the Triangle area: so many parks, so little time. 😂
We’re thankful every day we live in an area that has so many amazing outdoor opportunities. One of our goals for this year is to get out to some local favorites that we just haven’t made it to yet, as well as finally profile others we have been to, but haven’t yet documented.
Prairie Ridge Ecostation falls in that first bucket, and we’re so happy we finally made it out to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences' outdoor extension. We’ve been thinking about Prairie Ridge for a long time, waiting for a nice, overcast day to visit (prairie doesn’t equal a lot of shade for pale folks like us), and a perfect day finally came along. There did end up being a bit more shade in certain areas than we were expecting, but we still really appreciated the clouds.
Prairie Ridge boasts a number of great features:
• a beautiful garden
• educational signage
• these cute bison sculptures
• nature trails
• an outdoor classroom
• fantastic bird viewing and a tower for chimney swifts
• a wind turbine
• a StoryWalk currently
• it has Kids in Parks Track Trails and is an ecoEXPLORE HotSpot
While currently closed, it also has a Nature Playspace (see last photo) and a bird blind. Also, prior to COVID, there used to be many fun, free events at the park. We hope those will return soon!
Some logistics info:
• A small parking lot
• Bathrooms are located in the outdoor classroom
• Not stroller friendly
