Liberty Science Center - Jersey City, NJ

Writer's picture: PeterPeter

Continuing with our series of Life & Science reciprocity gems for those who may be traveling this holiday season, we present the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ. This is a spot my husband used to go to as a kid, so it was great for things to come full circle and be able to take our kids.

This space felt very much in line with what you find at the indoor area of Durham Life & Science. There are small areas with animals. Hands on areas demonstrating various aspects of science. Short programs led by staff. Multiple small kids play area (one is Curious George themed!). There is also an outdoor dinosaur dig section that made me think of the fossil dig area here.

Additionally, the museum also has some unique features, like a “Touch Tunnel” (a pitch black tunnel you have to feel your way through - Peter loved this), a crazy ropes playground suspended in between 2 floors called the “Infinity Climber” (Peter similarly loved this), and a neat toy train setup.

I will say even though there was a lot to do, it did, at times, feel like this space had multiple extra costs. Parking at the museum is $10. (No discount available with the reciprocity as it is managed by the State of New Jersey.) The large exhibit about the blue whale was an extra fee. Planetarium was an extra fee. There is a cafe, but the food felt expensive. I wouldn’t say these are reasons to not go, but just keep this in mind before going and maybe pack your own lunch.

Just like the last post, let us know in the comments if you have any great reciprocity spots around the country that can be a big help when you’re traveling with kids!
