We were over by RDU airport a few times this week, and being in that area reminded me of what I think is really one of the most underrated parks in all of the Triangle: Wake County Parks’ Lake Crabtree County Park. We’ve previously posted about the Old Beech Nature Trail, a short 0.6 mile loop, which is a fan favorite in our family, but that’s not all the park has.
Lake Crabtree has not 1, but 2 playgrounds. The playground in this first photo can be found if you take the 4th right off the main road in the park. This playground is great for new walkers because it has squishy ground. However, it is surrounded by mulch, so keep that in mind if your kids are still at the everything-in-the-mouth stage. This playground is surrounded by trees, but technically doesn’t have tree coverage over it, so it does get some shade at certain times of the day, but is subject to direct sunlight around mid-day.
Right next to this playground is a paved pathway to both a bathroom (less than a minute away), and a walkway that will take you to the second playground you see in photos 2-4.
The playground in photos 2-4 can be accessed as mentioned above, or you can park at the second or third right turn-ins from the park’s main road. This playground is all mulch, but has much better tree coverage.
Stay tuned because we have at least one, and maybe 2 more posts coming your way about this park.
Have you had fun at Lake Crabtree’s playgrounds? Let us know in the comments!
