“Hey, what did you think of the bridge?”
“Good! Sooo wiggly.”
- Peter
Hands down one of the most iconic outdoor locations in the Triangle is the suspension foot bridge that crosses the Eno River at the Fews Ford location of the Eno River State Park. We’ve been waiting until Peter got a little older to tackle this landmark because the bridge is narrow and there’s only a few thin cables fencing you onto the bridge as you walk across, at least 10 feet (probably more) above the river. You each know your children best, but I would definitely say this is not ideal for very small kids due to this feature. And, as Peter said, it’s WIGGLY. Even though it is narrow, Peter and I walked across together with me holding his hand, and let me tell you - I probably needed to hold his hand more than he needed mine! 🤣
The bridge is a short walk from the parking lot, but there are lots of tree roots and steps along the way. I would rank the walk moderate and not stroller friendly. (I’ve included screenshots from the State Park map so you can see where the bridge, marked “Footbridge,” is in relation to other landmarks at the park.)
There are bathrooms, a picnic shelter, and picnic tables nearby. There’s a moderate amount of parking (make sure to go all the way to the last parking area), but honestly not large for a state park, and it gets full early on the weekends.
Directly after you cross the bridge, take a left and along the river to an old historic cabin (there is an arrow on the sign you can’t miss saying “Wilderness Cabin”). There are also multiple areas where you can get right down into the river. Even though in total this is a very short walk, we spent quite a bit of time exploring. Or if you want more, you can continue on the Cox Mountain Trail, which is a 4.1 mile loop. (We have not done that trail, so can’t say much about it.)
Now is a great time to take this adventure since there is plenty of shade and you can cool off in the river, but we’d also imagine this will look beautiful in the fall, too, so we’ll probably be back soon when the leaves start to change.
Have you braved this bridge? What did you think? Let us know in the comments!
